According to the dairy of his commanding officer, Lieutenant Westmacott, Thomas Gillanders was put in charge of approximately 14 men as they formed a line to hold Baby 700 in the early afternoon of 15 April. The Anzac position on Baby 700 was overrun that afternoon. Westmacott later wrote in his diary, "Corporal Gillanders, modest and brave, was shot through the head whilst passing an order. Young Jack Petersen took over the section and was killed, too."

After their marriage I have not been able to locate or id correctly details on Census, deaths, or children relating to Jane and Henry Robertson.

I suspect they may have immigrated, perhaps to Canada or even to Australia or NZ. More records and details need to be searched at this stage.

I have located via an Ancestry Tree, a record of a Henry Robert John Robertson who married a Maria Hinton in 1884, Newcastle NSW Australia.
There is also a record for a death of a Jane Robertson who died in 1882, no other details recorded on the index, apart from Father Unknown and had died at Sydney. No age listed.
At this stage I do not know if this is our Jane or not ?

William's occupation was a Cotton Hand Loom Weaver or Woollen Weaver through to the 1861 Census. Then by the 1871 Census his occupation has changed to Warper, but his children still remain in the Cotton Weaving industry.

Warper: worked in the textile industry responsible for loading a thread called 'warp' onto looms, or a boat hauler at a docks, port or canal basin.

Warping machines have been invented to provide solutions for gauging yarn strength, length measurement and count measurement. Just like a sewing machine, warping machinery is manually operated for preparing leas yarn. Additionally, the machine is made available in two model options: the metric and the imperial system.

Seems that William changed the type of thread he was weaving and may have started to use machinary to make it.

By the 1881 Census it appears he has taken a major role in the Church by becoming a Church Officer. And on his death certificate he is listed just as a Church Officer. It does not say what church he was involved in but may not have been the Established or Free Church of Scotland as I cannot locate the baptism details of his children.

[CENTER:]ANOTHER 500 PEOPLE
Settlers from Britain

REMUERA BRINGS GOOD TYPE[:CENTER]

A fine lot of new settlers for New Zealand arrived by the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Remuera this morning from London. There were about 500 people on board, of whom 287 were assisted by the Government under the immigration scheme. Probably a third of the newcomers are from Scotland. They are a good type of people on the ship, and the amount of money they changed showed that they had not come empty-handed. Auckland takes 94 of the total, Wellington 86, Dunedin 22, and Lyttelton 20. Mr V Mills, of the Immigration Department, was in charge of the arrangements for the reception of the newcomers, and as usual everything worked like clock-work. The people for the South are leaving this evening by special train.
Except for the first few days after leaving England the trip was made in fine weather, and the passengers thoroughly enjoyed the run. Captain Cameron, who is so well and favourably known in New Zealand ports, endeared himself to his passengers by the keen interest he took in their welfare. In addition to looking after their material comforts, the versatile captain gave three lectures - on Pitcairn, the Panama Canal and on New Zealand. His address on life in the new land was full of excellent advice. The ship's officers assisted as usual in helping to make the large number on board enjoy the trip. Concerts, dances and lectures were frequent, and an energetic sports committee carried through an excellent programme on the voyage.

The details of the assisted passengers among the new arrivals are as follow:

Dunedin: 6 Men; 10 Women; 6 children - Total of 22.
