11907 Martin was born before Flodden (1513), his long life spanned nearly a century of warfare and conflict with England and he must early have learned the deceitfulness of princes and the readiness of the Scottish crown to use the Border clans as scapegoats and political pawns. Certainly he acknowledged no one as his master. Support by the Armstrong but ' bound to no man', Martin fought for the power and independence of Liddesdale and his own Clan awith a skill and daring that made him one of the most redoubtable men of his time and raised the Ellots to a dominating position on the Barders.
