12290 MORRIE CHURCH dies

Morrie Church, QSM, who battled for Wellington rugby league for 33 years, died of cancer early yesterday.
Maurice Walter Church, 58, represented Wellington in cricket (Plunket Shield 1941), rugby (halfback 1941) and rugby league (1948-1953). At the time of his death he was on the Wellington Rugby League board of control.
Three years ago he was told he was suffering from cancer and had his first operation. He was given only six months to live.
In the 1980 New Years Honours list he received the QSM for services to sport.
He first gained representative honours for Wellington in rugby in 1941 when he was selected as halfback against New Zealand Universities. He was a member of the Wellington Rugby Club.
He was a Wellington coach and selector from 1954 to 1957 and from 1967 to 1968. In 1969 he took the New Zealand Colts to Australia and he coached the Kiwis in the three-Test series against Britain in 1970.
Morrie Church was also a North Island selector from 1954 to 1957, a New Zealand selector in 1966 and 1972 and an active member of the Wellington Rugby League board of control for much of that period.
He was a life member of the Mercantile Cricket League, Wellington Working Men's Club and the Wellington Rugby League, He was also given the distinguished service awared from the New Zealand Rugby League.
In a tribute to Morrie Church the secretary of the W R L Board, Morrie Anderson said today, "He was a very staunch league, rugby and cricket man. He taught young league administrators a lot."
His funeral service will be held in the Church of Christ, Porirua, on Wednesday.
