12365 | Motor-Cycle Tragedy on Chatham Island Noel Arthur Dockery, aged 30, a teacher, was killed in a motor-cycle accident on Chatham Island on Saturday afternoon. Mr Dockery was a Wellington man, and formerly taught at Kaiwharawhara school. He had been teaching in the Chatham Islands for about a year. He is survived by his widow, who is also a teacher on Chatham Island. Tribute to Teacher A high tribute to Mr N A Dockery, who was killed in a motor-cycle accident in the Chatham Islands on Saturday, was paid by Professor C L Barley, professor of education at Victoria University College. "I think all connected with the training of teachers in Wellington would agree that, entering teaching as he did through the emergency training scheme, he was the finest recruit to teaching in their experieence," Professor Bailey said. "It was his first permanent job yet his work had already received the highest praise from the education authorities. It was characteristic of him that he was particularly concerned with helping Chatham Island boys to prepare themselves for more scientific farming, and had succeeded in securing a place for a boy in Flock House. How appropriate it would be if the Chatham Island people and the Government commemorated his service to them by establishing a bursary named after him". | Dockery, Noel Arthur (I6665)

12369 | Mr J M Nichol Recognised throughtout Otago as a sheep farming authority, Mr James Miller Nichol, died at his home in Waikouaiti last week. He was in his eightieth year. Mr Nichol was born and educated in Branxholm Braes, Hawick Scotland, and having worked on his father's farm as a shepherd, came to New Zealand in 1900. From Timaru he went to Central Otago and was a shepherd in the Nevis district from 1901 to 1905, when he returned to Scotland. On coming back to New Zealand early in 1907 he worked as head shepherd on the Kawarau station and later on the Gladbrooke station, Middlemarch. A horse accident at the later station prevented him from taking part in sport, but in 1913 he moved to Waikouaiti. there he managed the Kia Toa station until his retirement in 1946. He married Helen Sanderson of Flag Swamp in 1915. He served terms as president of the Waikouaiti Racing Club and of the Waikouaiti A & P Society, and became a respected judge of sheep, particularly fine woolled types, from Timaru to Invercargill. Mr Nichol founded the Palmerston-Waihemo Scottish Society and the Waikouaiti Highland Pipe Band, and was also a founder member of the Masonic Lodge at Karitane. His interest extended to gun club activities, and even after his retirement he was sought after for advice concerning sheep. A major operation last year curtailed most of his interests. 12370 | Mr R M Nichol Mr Robert Millar Nichol, a well-known stud stock representative in South Canterbury in the 1960s and early 1970s, died at Amberley on Monday. He was 63. Mr Nichol was a regular caller on district stud sheep and cattle breeders and was often involved in the shipment of live breeding stock through the Port of Timaru. First resident stud stock officer for Dalgety NZ Ltd in the region, he was regarded as a competent judge of sheep and cattle and as a good organiser. One farmer described Mr Nichol as a "tireless worker" who won the respect of stud stock breeders. An employer said Mr Nichol was a competent, conscientious and friendly man who imparted a dignity to his work. Born in Dunedin in 1917 and educated at Palmerston District High School, Mr Nichol was employed as a shepherd on Kiatoa Station in the Palmerston area. At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was posted to Britain where he saw active service as a wireless-air gunner in Coastal Command with Nos 52, 293 and 484 Squadrons. He also served in the Mediterranean theatre based on Malta and in 1942 was injured in an air crash over the island. He rose to the rank of flying officer. He returned to New Zealand in 1945 and was employed as a fat lamb buyer for Simms Cooper at Pahiatua until 1953 when he went to Wanganui and was a stock agent for Levin and Co. for a number of years. He also managed a farm and was again a stock agent at Waipukurau for Deplichet and McLeod. He joined Dalgety NZ Ltd in Christchurch in 1965 as a stud stock representative and soon after transferred to Timaru where he was based until 1972 when he resigned. A keen rugby player, Mr Nichol was later a referee and he controlled a number of provincial represenative matches in the Wairarapa. He was a keen golfer playing in Wanganui and Timaru where he was a member of the Timaru Club. Mr Nichol was a foundation member and president of the Wanganui Brevet Club and a member of the Scottish Masonic Lodge in Wanganui. He was a member of the South Canterbury RSA.
