SS Tainui Departed London 21 Aug 1914, and arrived in Wellington 5th Oct 1914.

She carried 17 1st Class 56 2nd Class and 280 in 3rd Class which were assisted immigrants.
She came via Cape Town and Hobart before docking at Wellington.
The Tainui had quite a trip out, as War had just started, she had a narrow escape from being sunk, needed to have all her lights out on deck and port holes were masked up. Once past Cape Town all was well and she had good weather until reaching Hobart and Wellington.

In the 3rd Class passenger lists was:
Ethel McKay, a Domestic aged 21 from Scotland.

Also on board was George Farnworth, listed as a Mariner (? ) aged 24 from England.

George became Ethel's husband in 1917.

Still having difficulty in locating where James died and what year.
Many are similar with his birth year and living in similar areas. Jane is also difficult as are his children - see individual notes regarding them.

Suspect the whole family may have immigrated somewhere as cannot seem to find details regarding any of them after the child Jean was born in 1918.

Possible death for James McGrath, 1951 March Qtr, Lancaster Lancashire, Vol 10c Page 986 - Aged 75 (1876) - this is incorrect.

Stories in family say a variety of ways he arrived in NZ.

One, is that he was in Sydney when his friend was murdered, he did not want to be involved so jumped the next ship going to NZ. This was around 1862/63
Another story is that he did not want to be a preist being the 3rd son, or join the army, so ran away to sea and jumped off at NZ.
Another story is that he was on a ship to Australia, while there heard about the gold rushes in NZ and went to try his luck.
Also stories re he joined Garibali's Army but did not find it to his liking and left.
