7595 A D Cairns Dead
Well Known Jeweler Succumbes to Apoplexy in Hartford.

Alexander D Cairns, the well-known jeweller, died suddenly of apoplexy in Hartord. Sunday afternoon, while on a business trip to that city. Mr Cairns had been in rather delicate health for some time, but his death was unexpected.
Mr Cairns was born in Langham, Scotland, 45 years ago, and had been a resident of this country 22 years. He was a draftsman by trade, and worked at that business in a South Boston machine shop for five years. Seventeen years ago he engaged in the jewellery business in which he amassed a comfortable fortune. He was well-known in and about newspaper row.
He was a member of many secret orders and other societies, among them the Masons, the British charitable society, Victorian club, Boston athletic association, and the Scots charitable society. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
He lived at 171 Townsend St, Roxbury, and leaves a wife and two children. The funeral will be held at his residence tomorrow at 2.30pm.

7597 A lovely story about Peter, has come to me via one of his nephews - Roger McMilan:

"Peter was a very much perfectionist, particularly when it came to his car. He never drove it himself ... a neighbour used to chaffeur him on fine days only and usually for a Sunday drive. The car was never driven in the rain and after an outing it was washed and polished all over and that included polishing under the mudguards as well as on top. It was always under a dust cover sheet."

7599 A melancholy case of suicide occurred at Leamington early on Monday, when a single woman, named Edith Burbidge, aged 36, who took in lodgers at 10 Court Street, committed self destruction by drowning herself in a well in the back yard.
An inquest was held by Mr D R Wynter at the Old Town Hall, on Tuesday morning.
Mr John Lewis was foreman of the jury - Hannah Percox, wife of Charles Percox, waggoner, of Tachbrook, and sister of the deceased, said the latter was 31 years of age and unmarried. She had not seen her since last December, but knew she was at times very depressed.
May Sigley, Wife of Abraham Sigley, builder, Leek, in Staffordshire, said she had lodged with the deceased. She last saw her alive at half-past 10 on Sunday night, and she then spoke very rationally. At four oçlock in the morning, witness heard a scraping and a gurgling noise in the yard, which was overlooked from her window. She looked out, but saw nothing, and went back to bed again.

etc.

The jury was asked to decide whether they thought the woman accidently fell into the well, or whether she purposely drowned herself.
The jury returned a verdict of "Suicide while temporily insane".

Burbidge, Edith (I2571)

7600 A number of friends, and members of the local Lodge of Odd Fellows, followed the remains of the late Mr John Yates to the grave, yesterday afternoon.

Mr John Yates, of the Upper Plain, Masterton, expired on Sunday last at the ripe age of 74 years. The deceased settler held high rank as an Odd Fellow being one of the oldest of the brethren in the Wellington Provincial District.
