| 7603 | A TERRIBLE FALL LIGHTHOUSE-KEEPER KILLED AT DOG ISLAND. Our Bluff correspondent informs us that early yesterday morning, signals were made from Dog Island Lighthouse that medical assistance was required, and that the principal light-keeper was dying. The pilot crew took Dr Closs, Sergeant Nickle, and the Customs officer across, when they found Clark dead. It appears that Clark went up the tower at 4am to relieve Wm. Collie, and he went home. Mrs Clark went out about half-past seven, and noticed that the lights were still buring although it was daylight. Not seeing her husband, she went up the tower, but could not find him. On coming down she called Collie, and he, accompanied by first assitant Harper, searched the outside of the tower without success, and on opening a door inside the tower, at the basement they discovered the body of Clark in the recess where the flasing apparatus weights are suspended. The last entry on the slate in the tower shows twenty minutes past six, and it is supposed that deceased had overbalanced himself whilst adjusting the weight, and fallen down the centre of the tower, a distance of about seventy-six feet. An inquest will probably be held. | McGraw\ James Clark, Edward (I157)

| 7604 | A very interesting article to read all about Shettleston by Dan McAleer Oct 1930 regarding past memories and details of Old Shettleston. There is reference to a William Gardiner who was a Carter living in the area. I am uncertain if this would be my William Gardner but could well be. Just after -4- "The Palace Pit was opposite where now stands York Terrace, now the entrance to the house of the late Mr Wm Burnside, butcher. Where Doctor Davidson's house is built, there used to be a small row of houses owned by Wm. Gardiner, wife and family and about 30 yards to the west of Gradiners there were a clachan of houses called Crown Hall. Gardiner had 14 horses and he carted the coals from the Palace pit, No 2 and No 9 pits to Parkhead Forge. There were no railways then. There was then Broad-Rails laid down from Sandyhills to Parkhead Cross. The three pits that I have mentioned were all worked in the "Truck System". The Colliers received no money. There was a store in Sandyhills and the miners got goods for their work. http://www.glasgowhistory.co.uk/ShettlestonSketch.htm | Gardner, William (I4229)

| 7605 | A Wedding in St Matthews Church this afternoon is creating quite a flutter in the community, and a special train is expected to bring a large relay of wedding guests from Wellington. The bride is Miss Yates of the Upper Plain, and the happy bridgroom Mr Chapman of Wellington. MARRIAGE CLAPHAM- YATES On the 23rd Inst at St Matthew's Church, Masterton by the Rev W E Paige, T J Clapham, third son of the late T H Clapham, to Agnes, third daughter of the late H Yates, of Wellington. Wellington papers please copy. St. Matthew's Church was crowded to excess yesterday afternoon by visitors anxious to witness the celebration of the nuptials of Miss Yates, of the Upper Plain, and Mr Clapham, a gentleman who occupies a position in the Postal Department at Wellington. The bride, who was pronounced to be one of the prettiest centres of any marriage group which had yet appeared in the church, was charmingly attired in oriental lace and cream cashmere, wearing also gold ornaments, the gift of the bridegroom's mother. The four principal bridesmaids, Miss Annie Yates, Miss Amy Yates, and Misses Clapham (2), wore garnet brooches, set in gold, the gift of the bridegroom, and were attired in oriental lace dresses trimmed with pale blue ribbon. The ceremoney was performed by the Rev W E Paige, Mrs Paige kindly playing "The Wedding March". The party, numbering between sixty and seventy then drove to Mrs Yates' residence on the Upper Plain, where a sumptuous breakfast was followed by a ball, which only terminated with the appearance of daylight this morning. To-day the happy couple proceed to Rangitikei, having arranged to spend their honeymoon in that district. | Family: Thomas Joseph Clapham / Agnes Yates (F2298)

| 7615 | According to Euphemia's burial record she was aged 81 when she died. I feel this may be incorrect or I have the wrong person. 1845 - 81 = 1764) There are births of Euphan Blaikie on the 29 Dec 1781, Liberton, Midlothian to parents George Blaikie & Anne Clarke. There is also an entry for a Euphan Blaikie born 18 Feb 1775, South Leith, Midlothian to parents Henry Blaikie & Katarine Ross. More research would need to be done to confirm any of the above details. The parent George and Anne, make good sense due to first child being called George, but this would make Euphan only 14 when she married William Davidson. | Blaikie, Euphan (I5099)

| 7618 | According to James's military records he would have been born in Nov 1862. Cannot locate an entry in Banffshire or Aberdeenshire that would match for this. We have some possible entries but no actual proof of who James's mother might have been. It is also very strange that Alexander - his father records his birth as being in Keith Banffshire and aged 8yrs in the 1871 Census, and yet Alexander records his nephew James Watt as being born in Drumblade Aberdeen. Would have thought Alexander would have recorded the correct place of birth. James records his place of birth on all records as Drumblade Aberdeen. Need contact with family to help with this matter. | Innes, James (I4288)

| 7621 | According to the transcirpt regarding James Miller, her son, she lived in the Old House where he was weaving until 1833 when she died. Most likely buried in Old Teviothead Cemetery. No burial located at this stage - Jan 2015, under Miller or Douglas If Helen is the person in the 1841 Census, she may also have been the Witness to the baptism of Douglas Hall Miller on the 21 Feb 1849. If this is correct, then she died between 21 Feb 1849 and date of 1851 Census 30 March 1851. | Douglas, Helen (I65)
