8201 Ashburton Fire Brigade, Annual Dinner: (2 Columns plus)
Several Apologies - J H Pauling (who however put in an appearance later) Cr. Pauling, one of the members of the Borough Council returned thanks, As an old fireman he could say for himself, and every Councillor at the table, that every reasonable request of the Brigade would be attended to. He might mention that through the instrumentality of the chairman of the County Council, it had been decided by that body to subsidise the Fire Brigade to enable outside centres to get the benefit of its services (applause)

Pauling, James Henry (Gibson) (I555)

8202 Ashburton Guards: (1 1/2 Column)
Farewell Social and Presentation to Lieutenant R M Cuthbertson. (J H Pauling one of eight named - offical seating)
After duly horouring the usual loyal toast, the chairman invited Mr J H Pauling to propose the first toast of the evening "The Army and Navy". Mr Pauling said it was apparent that the Army had its hands full at present, but they were able to cope with almost any reasonable demand. We in the colonies, were recognised as a part of the great Empire, and must take our part in its defence. The appearance of our (the colony's) boys at the front had been an eye opener to the whole world and their deeds at Slingersfontein spoke for their valor and capabilities. Regarding the Navy, the Transvaal did not possess one, which was perhaps fortunate for them, for we had nothing to fear in that direction for the defence of the Empire and Queen. (applause). He was sure if necessity arose, ever man in the colony would take up a rifle for our noble Queen. He coupled with the toast the names of Captain Dolman Lieutenant A. Clarke and E F Nicoll (Lots more)
