8508 BOARDING HOUSE FIRE

WOMAN BADLY BURNED
MAN ESCAPES DOWN LADDER

"A large wooden residence, No 34 Tennyson Street, used as a boarding house, was badly damaged by fire last night. The blaze was not of long duration, but while it lasted it was the most spectacular fire in Dunedin for some time and was visible from many parts of the city.
The proprietress of the boarding house, Mrs Helen Scott, received serious burns about the arms, body and head, and was removed to the Public Hospital. Her son, Leslie, aged 17, was also taken to the Hospital with burns to his hands. A war pensioner, Mr J Dillon, was able to escape from the burning building when a neighbour placed a ladder at the back of the house. There were two or three other occupants of the house present when the fire was discovered, but they did not have time to remove any of their belongings."

The Fire Brigade had received numerous calls around 9.15pm and the fire was out by 10pm, but a large part of the back part of the house, which was three storeys, was badly damaged.
It was thought the fire had started in the kitchen, and assumed that Mrs Scott and her son met with their injuries in a vain effort to cope with the fire in its early stages, but the fire spread very rapidly.

Family have said that Nellie was very badly burnt and spent 3/6mths in Hospital and used to have to use lots and lots of Lanolin afterwards.
Leslie also had his hands burnt and he also saved his sister Gretta

8510 Bob was a great Mechanic, and used to love driving Racing Cars in competitions.
The "Bob Scott Memorial Hill Climb" which is held each year in Kaitangata is in rememberance of him. His sons Robert and Greg have preserved his cars and use them in the race. His Grandsons are also becoming involved in this event.
He was also a JP and the Mayor of Kaitangata.
Bob raced against some of the best in the world, and he won 3 South Island titles. He was a regular sight at the annual Dunedin street race and really enjoyed the sport.
When a young boy, my Mum told me stories about Bob, building up bicyles out of old pram wheel rims (no tyres), and held together with bits of wire and nuts and bolts that he could find, no brakes and just old bits and pieces of bikes, then he would race down Corstorphine Rd and also the hill that was called "Lady Sidey's ". My Mum said he was Always the Daredevil, but would do anything for you.

Scott, Robert Kay (Bob) (I281)

8511 Bob was born premature at 7mths.
Had no fingernails and no eyelashes.
Daisy had had a fright with a mouse while pregnant with Bob, and when Bob had a birth mark on his back that looked like a mouse, there was lots of comments made about it.

8512 Body Found in Harbour

The decomposed body of a middle aged man, believed to be a relieft worker, Arthur Symons, was found floating in the harbour off the Clyde Quay Wharf shortly after noon today. The body was recovered by Constables Beal and Ward and taken to the morgue. Although identification had not been definitely established when "The Post" went to press, it is thought that the body is that of Symons, who has been missing from the place where he was lodging since 4th August. From its appearance the body had been in the water for some weeks.

8531 BROWN
On March 2nd, at Ashburton, William, the beloved husband of Margaret Brown; aged 58

FOUND DROWNED
The Inquest.
An inquest concerning the death of William Brown, builder and contractor, whose body was found in the Domain swimming bath early on Thursday morning was held before the Coroner, Mr V G Day, SM today.
William Brown, son of the deceased, said that his father went to bed at 10 o'clock on Wednesday, suffering from back trouble. He had been drinking of late, but not for the two days previous to his death. He heard his father get up about 4 o'clock on the morning of the fatality, and get a drink of water. About twenty minutes to five Mrs Brown woke him, and told witness that his father was missing. He waited for a time, expecting his father to return, but as he did not do so, witness went in search of him. As he passed through the Domain at the swimming bath, he saw his father's cap, which he found, was on deceased's head, the body being upright in the deep water. Witness tried to raise the body, but failed. He went for assistance, and brought back Mr J Readhead, the curator of the Domain, and together they got the body out. His father had not been in good health for some two years, and about the beginning of last month seemed to be worried by financial troubles. Deceased had also had a great deal of domestic trouble, but he knew of no reason why his father should commit suicide. He had never threatened to do anything of the kind.
David John, assistant curator of the Public Gardens, Christchurch, gave evidence as to assisting in getting the body out of the water.
Alexander McDonald, partner in the firm of Brown and McDonald, builders, said that deceased, who was his brother-in-law, was not of a despondent turn of mind. The firm was in a good financial position. He had seen deceased in bed on Wednesday, and decease told him that he might be well in a very short time. He had been drinking at the time, witness thought. He could see no reason why he should commit suicide. He certainly had domestic trouble, but that would not warrant any action of that kind.
Dr Hunter said that shortly after 6.30am on Thursday he was called to see the body, and when he arrived, Mr Readhead, was trying artificial means of respiration. There were no signs of life, and its appearance pointed to the cause of death being drowning, although, if deceased had been in a weak state of health, it was quite possible that death might have followed on the shock caused by jumping into the cold water.
The Coroner returned an open verdict of "Found Drowned".
