| 9344 | Drowning of a Manx Skipper. A very sad accident occurred on Friday night on board the ketch "Fayaway", of Ramsey, owned by Mr R Cowley, JP. It appears that the "Fayaway" left Laxey for Liverpool on Friday at about half an hour after midnight, in tow of the small steamer "Turtle", of Glasgow. There were on board the ketch the master, Thomas Corlett and Henry Radcliffe. The night was calm, though dark, and there was no wind. About two o'clock, when the two vessels were about seven or eight miles out of Laxey, the tow rope suddenly parted, and the Turtle proceeded to Liverpool. This was the last time the skipper, Thomas Corlett, was seen, as Radcliffe saw him pulling in the broken tow rope, and shortly afterwards missed him; and on looking for him, was unable to discover any trace of him on board. He had not heard any splash or cry, and it was only after a thorough search that he made sure that Corlett must have gone overboard. He shouted and looked about overboard, but could find no sign of the skipper; and as the vessel was making no way, there being no wind, there can be little doubt that he is drowned. It is thought that the boom, swinging over, must have struck Corlett and stunned him, and that he must have been knocked overboard unconscious. Nothing has yet been heard of the body. Corlett was an Andreas man, hailing from the Lhen Moar, where his relatives reside. He leaves a widow and one child. Radcliffe, who was on board the "Fayaway," has had another similar experience in his life before, as his brother was knocked overboard and drowned a few years ago, off the Point of Ayre in just the same way. Our Lexey correspondent adds: Radcliffe turned the boat round after the discovery, and sailed back again to Laxey bay. Two Laxey fishermen, Edward Cowley and James Skillicorn, who were fishing in the bay, approached the smack, and the sad fate of the Captain was made known to them by the old man Radcliffe. Cowley went on board the vessel, and took her to Ramsey on Saturday morning. | Corlett, Thomas (I704)
