  	William used to ride his bike from their home in Bannockburn to work at a gold mine in the Kawarau Gorge (just the Cromwell side of the Roaring Meg Power Station); one night on his return home, he was hit by a drunk driver and had to spend a year in Dunedin Hospital with a badly broken leg. For some time afterwards he went back to work at the mine, with each day his wife Jean strapping his bad leg to the pedal of his bike, and away he would go, over the sandy Cromwell flats and unsealed roads.
