Mr K A GILLANDERS
The death has occurred of Mr Kenneth Alexander Gillanders, of Waiteti, Te Kuiti. Mr Gillanders, who was 77 years of age, came to New Zealand from Britain with his wife and family on the steamer Devon in 1908, and shortly afterwards took up bush land in the Waiteti Valley, near Te Kuiti, where all lived in tents till they got land cleared to build a house. He resided there continuously with the exception of a few years spent at Silverdale. Prior to coming to New Zealand Mr Gillanders was in business in Inverness, Scotland, where he was closely identifed with various local bodies and institutiions, being a member of the Inverness Town Council and Inverness County Council, convener of the Fire Brigade Committee and an officer of the Inverness troop of Lovat Scouts. For many years Mr Gillanders was prominent in church work, both in Scotland and New Zealand, and he was the last of the original session of the Te Kuiti Presbyterian Church. In 1916/26 he was appointed a justice of the peace.
