Thomas went back to Scotland to try and secure a situation. He was away for a year. During that time he found work in Birmingham, England as a Manager of a Bodega. ( A Wine shop or warehouse for storing or aging wine, or a grocery store). He had to leave his job in Birmingham as a warrent was issued for his arrest due to defalcations of money. A search was also made in Alloa, his home town as well a Glasgow and Arran where he had also stayed. It is said that he used an assumed name when in Arran.
