  	William Ivan Steele Leading Seaman Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve Letter of Commendation (US), 1943 On the evening of the 29/30 Jan 1943, the two small Corvettes HMNZS Kiwi and Moa, worked together to ram and destroy a large and heavily-armed Japanese Submarine, just of Guadalcanar. These Corvettes were used as minesweepers, and it was the Kiwi that rammed the Sub 3 times. William (Bill) Steele Recieved a Letter of Commendation, from the United States Commander of the South Pacific Area in the name of the President of the US. The advice was recieved by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) 3 March 1943

  	After Bill came back from Overseas, he was posted to Lyttleton on the HMNZS Hautapu mine sweeper. Edna boarded with Mr McDowall who had a house in Station Road Heathcote. Edna was unable to get to The Maternity Hospitals in Christchurch, so Edna needed to go to Dunedin. Her father Adam Scott was the Station Master in Christchurch at the time, and he made sure that Edna was put in a first class compartment. This would have been for the birth of Brian. During the time they stayed at Heathcote, Adam used to come and visit with his daughter Edna each lunch time. After the war the family moved back to Dunedin. (Information from Brian Steele)
