POLMAISE PIT EXPLOSION
One of Three Injured Men Died in Infirmary
Three men suffered burning injuries on Friday as the result of an ignition of gas in No 1 Pit, Polmaise Colliery, Millhall, near Stirling.
The injured men, who were taken to Stirling Royal Infirmary, were Thomas Laird, sen, oversman, Millhall Farm, Stirling; Bertie Boyle, fireman, 32 East Murrayfield, Bannockburn; and Joseph Hamil, chain runner, 13 Ochilview, Cowie.
Laird succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning. It was thought at first that his injuries were not of a very serious nature, but his condition became worse during Friday night. He had been employed at the Colliery for 25 years. He leaves a wife and a grown up family.
Boyle, who was also badly burned about the head, face, and arms, still lies in a serious condition in the Infirmary. Hamil escaped with burns on the right arm and shoulder and slight injuries to his face. He was able to leave the Infirmary on Saturday afternoon.
The explosion occurred in Miller's Dook, in the main coal section. The men were engaged on an inspection, and were alone in the Dook at the time, but 12 other men were employed in the vicinity. The cause of the ignition is not yet known.
About 190 men were at work in No 1 Pit at the time, but it was not found necessary to withdraw them all from the workings. Men engaged on the affected section, however, were brought to the surface.
Mr John Muir, the manager of the colliery, immediately went down the pit and made an inspection. It was found that very little damage had been done by the explosion. Mr James Watson, general manager of Messrs Archibald Russell, Ltd; the owners of the colliery, arrived later and went down to examine the section where the explosion occurred.
In an interview Hamil stated that he was taking a hutch along the main road, and that just as he reached the entrance to the dook, which the oversman and the fireman had previously entered, there was a blinding flash and a roar. He was thrown to the pavement, and remembered nothing until men from the next dook came running to discover what had happened.
William McFarlane, a Fallin man, who was the first of the men who ran to the rescue, was himself slightly injured by the force of the explosion as it expended itself along the airway to the main road.
