- Family story is that after William's Mother died in 1881, William who was only about 11yrs of age, went to live with an Aunt. This Aunt most likely may have been his actual cousin Helen Wilson who was married to Thomas Shaw.
Helen's Mother was Helen Stewart sister to William's Mother Margaret.
Due to Helen Stewart having married Andrew Watt who was a widower in 1879 and they then lived in Midlothian and that Helen was helping with bringing up his children, it is uncertain if William was cared for by her.
The fact that young children went to work around the age of 11/13, means that William most likely started his working life in the Coal Mining industry at a very young age.

William Simpson was extremely high within the Masonic Lodge. He most likely was a Grand Master and perhaps even higher. Some of his Life Memberships commence around 1916 with the most Prestigious being signed in 1921 as a Knight Companion.
There are two versions of the same photo. William rushed to the photographers but forgot to take his Masonic Apron with him. Photo was taken and then later the apron was later added to the photo.
