  	Birth could be also before this date, as have been unable to identify any parents or correct burial to give correct date of birth. May not even have been born in Lanark area either, but suspect Lanark will be correct once I can establish other details.

  	Cannot be certain about any of the burial records I have so far downloaded from Scotlandspeople. The one most closest to what I think would have been William's age, is for a death on the 17th Jan 1841. Burial Record: Buried 21st Jan 1841, William Gardner, Labourer, Exact Residence: Renton ?; Undertaker or Wright was Craig; Where Buried, In the Lair of Robert Craig, 7 West, New Graveyard; Cause of Death, Decline; Aged 69; Type of Funeral was Hearse with 2 Horses; Cost of Funeral was £3 6s 6d The above burial would make William born c 1772, meaning around age of 20yrs when he married. I have doubts about the occupation and place of residence. The only Renton I can locate is in Dunbarton, which I find strange he would be living in that area. I also cannot connect this William to Robert Craig and our family. I did quite a bit of reserach on a Robert Craig that had married Margaret Gardner, but she was living in Glasgow and via their marriage notice her father was still living and at Paisley. Robert Craig was a Surgeon. Other possible burials are: 3 July 1823, William Gardner, aged 66yrs, of Asthma and buried in J Thorntons Lair (b 1757, m aged 35) 20 August 1823, Gorbals, William Gardner, aged 60, Decline ( b 1763, m aged 29) 16 April 1840, William Gardner, aged 63, Palsy (b 1777, m aged 15)

  Research Note	At the time that William married in 1792 his occupation was listed as a SMITH, and this was also his occupation on the baptisms of his first two children, Jean and Mary. From the period of 1796 - 1817, about 21 years his occupation is listed as a CARTER and the baptisms of his children occured around the Shettleston area. Only on the baptism of his last child, Alexander in 1819, has his occupation changed to Coalier.I think he was still a Carter of Coal rather than working down the actual mines as a Collier. We also have James and Andrew Gilmour being witnesses to the baptisms and later on David Templeton. I suspect these people have connections in perhaps being Elizabeth's brothers or Uncles and I wonder if the David Templeton has any relation to David Temple who married Jean Gardner.
  Research Note	A very interesting article to read all about Shettleston by Dan McAleer Oct 1930 regarding past memories and details of Old Shettleston. There is reference to a William Gardiner who was a Carter living in the area. I am uncertain if this would be my William Gardner but could well be. Just after -4- "The Palace Pit was opposite where now stands York Terrace, now the entrance to the house of the late Mr Wm Burnside, butcher. Where Doctor Davidson's house is built, there used to be a small row of houses owned by Wm. Gardiner, wife and family and about 30 yards to the west of Gradiners there were a clachan of houses called Crown Hall. Gardiner had 14 horses and he carted the coals from the Palace pit, No 2 and No 9 pits to Parkhead Forge. There were no railways then. There was then Broad-Rails laid down from Sandyhills to Parkhead Cross. The three pits that I have mentioned were all worked in the "Truck System". The Colliers received no money.
