  	It appears that Robert has joined the Military before the 1851 Census takes place as I cannot locate him on it. First Miltary record relates to entitlement of Medals for the Crimean War 1854 - 1855. Royal Sappers & Miners No 1368 2nd Corp Robert Wintrup Crimea Medal, also Alma 20 Sept and Inkerman 5th Nov. He was based in Kent at Brompton where the Royal Sappers & Miners had their headquaters when he married Ellen Patterson in 1856. Next record is of Robert listed on the 1861 Worldwide Army Index. These are lists of serving solidiers for the April- June quarter paylists and further details would be held at National Archives England. Robert Wintrup Service No 1368 Sergeant 6th Co Royal Engineers New Zealand NA Ref WO11/ 190 Robert appears on the list of Royal Engineers entitled for the NZ War Medal. Page 71 Non Effective List Nominal Roll of Officers Non Commissioned Officers and the above Corps whoese services during the Wars in New Zealand entitled them to Medal for the same under General Order 17 of 1869 and who have since deserted or been discharged.
