Fatal Boat Accident at Cockenzie - Five Lives Lost.
On Friday morning a fishing boat beloning to Cockenzie was upset while endeavouring to make the harbour, and the crew, consisting of five persons, were drowned. The boat was the property of Charles Blaikie, fisherman, and was manned by himself, his two sons (Charles and Peter Blaikie), and two married men, Charles Slight and George Girrion. They left the harbour about five o'clock on Friday morning for the fishing ground, but being unable to cast their nets they were returning to Cockenzie, and while trying to make the harbour the boat suddenly upset, and all the crew sank.
All the men drowned were married, and have left families unprovided for. On Saturday several crews went to where the boat was seen to go down, and sweeped with grappling gear, fitted for the purpose, but owing to the unfavourable state of the weather they only succeeded in finding the body of Charles Slight and a scull full of baited lines which had not been shot. From the continued gales it is now feared that the remaining four bodies, and the boat, which had her sail set, have been moved from the fatal spot.
